Aston Villa have been dealt a crushing blow in their pursuit of Kalvin Phillips after Leeds United director of football Victor Orta all but guaranteed the midfielder will stay at the Championship club.
Villa have been keen on Phillips all summer but the two clubs remain well apart on their valuation of the highly-rated 23-year-old.
Leeds are holding firm to an asking price of over £25m for the Elland Road academy graduate – a figure that Villa haven’t been willing to meet.
Dean Smith hasn’t given up on Phillips but Leeds have offered him a new contract on improved terms in a bid to keep him away from Villa’s clutches.

Orta is leading the talks and the Leeds chief has revealed he is confident the deal will be signed - forcing the claret and blues to look elsewhere.
“It’s not a negotiation," he told LeedsLive. "He is a Leeds United player and will be a Leeds United player for the season 19/20. Leeds United want Kalvin Phillips to stay next year 100 per cent.”

 Pushed for his own personal take on the situation, Orta said: “Yes, personally, as Victor Orta, I believe [he will agree a new deal].

Phillips, whose current contract expires in 2021, earned a place in the Championship team of the year as Marcelo Bielsa side's were beaten by Derby County in the play-off semi fiinal.
Villa defeated the Rams as Wembley to earn promotion to the Premier League and already opened their cheque book to make eight new signings during the transfer window.
They’ve broken their transfer record to land Wesley Moraes from Club Brugge, splashed out to secure to Tyrone Mings’ return from Bournemouth – and also landed Jota, Anwar El Ghazi, Kortney Hause, Matt Targett, Ezri Konsa and Bjorn Engels.
